Captain Morgan

How we introduced a new rum to Reddit without getting roasted.

The Brief Captain Morgan tasked us with celebrating the launch of their new Sweet Chili Lime rum on Reddit. The core objective was to drive awareness and sales by creating a long-form, paid Reddit post that would introduce the "mouth-blowing" flavor to a highly discerning audience, all while avoiding the community's infamous backlash against inauthentic advertising.

The "Why" / Creative Insight On Reddit, authenticity isn't just a buzzword; it's a requirement for survival. The community thrives on its insulation from mainstream marketing, and they can spot an outsider a mile away. The core insight was that to succeed, we couldn't talk at the community; we had to become part of it and speak with them, using their language, their formats, and their unique brand of analytical enthusiasm.

Strategic Direction The strategy was one of complete immersion. Before writing a single word, we dove deep into Reddit's thriving world of beverage connoisseurs, analyzing how they review products, what flavor notes they fixate on, and the specific tone they use. This research allowed us to craft a pseudo-scientific, deep-dive post that mirrored the content they already valued. As Co-Copywriter, I helped shape this voice, ensuring the final piece felt less like an advertisement and more like a detailed, passionate analysis from a fellow enthusiast.

Results The campaign resulted in a full-page adventure into the world of the new rum. The post, which was accepted and engaged with by the community, provided a multi-level breakdown of the flavor profile, production process, and cultural impact of the new flavor. This successful piece of native advertising drove both awareness and sales by respecting the platform's culture and speaking its language.
